Brussels

What a day! The whole of Europe in one day….exhausting. We arrived in Brussels yesterday after a quick train ride from Amsterdam where we said goodbye to Jess. We chilled out for the arvo and even managed to cook our own dinner for the first time in a while.

This morning we headed out to look round the city. It is a very nice city, and even on a Saturday morning seemed very quiet. Our first stop was the cathedral, which was huge.

We then made our way to the Grand Place which is a big square that is surrounded by amazing buildings.

Next we walked down to the Palais de Justice. It is an awesome building but was like a lot of other buildings on our trip, under construction!

We then decided to do a tour of Europe so headed to Mini Europe and the Atomium. Was a really cool place to see but made us realise that there is sooo much more that we have not seen on this trip.

Last night in Brussels tonight. We are going to Bruges tomorrow. Danielle is currently eating some Zespri Kiwifruit straight from NZ!

Amsterdam: Day 2

Another great day in Amsterdam. We got up after a great sleep in then went looking for a place to hire bikes. It proved to be too much of a hassle as they wanted every single life detail so we decided to flag it and get water bikes instead. So we cruised around the canals which was a really cool way to the city.

We then checked out one of the Iamsterdam signs on our way to the Heineken factory. The tour was great, sooo much beer!

Amsterdam

We are now in Amsterdam. We arrived yesterday evening after a long train ride from Berlin. We got in, found our hostel then walked along one of the canals into the Red Light District. Amsterdam is a very nice city, a better version of Venice. The Red Light District was a bit of an eye opener!

image

Today we got up and cruised into town. Long gone are the days of sunshine, we now have rain and it is a lot colder. We walked around town looking at the local shops and trying some local food. We had some delicious 100 year old cheese

Tomorrow we plan to head to the Heineken factory for a tour then get some bikes and ride around. The city is dominated by bikes so is very bike friendly.

Berlin

A great day in Berlin today. Got up nice and early and made the most of a free breakfast then headed to the TV Tower and Alexanderplatz Square.

We then braved the weather (exactly like NZ, sunny one minute raining the next) and walked to the Brandedeburger Tor. Which is the most famous gate from the Berlin wall. Right next to that was the German Parliament building.

image

image

We then went to the Holocaust Memorial which was very good to see but also quite freaky as well.

image

image

image

Next we wandered down Tier Garten to the Siegessaule, which is a golden statue.

image

image

Finally we went to the East Side Gallery, which is the longest part of the Berlin Wall still remaining. It was really cool to see, and there was some amazing artwork.

We are now chilling at a local bar which sells beer by the litre. It’s awesome!

Last night in Berlin tonight. We have a 7 hour train ride to Amsterdam tomorrow.

Prague

What a city!!  We have finally found a place that we could happily live in. Every street seems to be so old. Cobbled streets and no modern buildings. The beer is sooo cheap. Only 36 cents for half a litre and it’s delicious.

We arrived yesterday after a 5 hour train ride from Vienna. Got into a 3 bed deluxe apartment (which is awesome) and decided to chill for the rest of the day.

This morning we looked around the city which is awesome. We headed to Prague Castle first then made our way to Lennon Wall and Charles Bridge. Next we found the old Jewish part of the city and the Old City.

Off to a local pub tonight that has 35 beers on tap including chocolate beer! Last night tonight then off to Berlin tomorrow.

Vienna: Day 2

A casual day today. Went to Vienna Zoo with Jess this morning. It is the oldest zoo in the world so was pretty cool to see. They even had Jaguars.

image

image

We then had a look round Vienna. Another old city with lots of old buildings, which seem to all be under construction! Still got some good shots though.

Heading to Prague tomorrow morning which we are really excited about. Have heard many good things about the city.

Vienna

Another change of plans today. We were supposed to be catching the overnight train to Vienna tonight but couldn’t reserve tickets. So decided to jump on the 7am train to Vienna. We arrived at about 2pm. We found our hostel then headed out to meet up with Jess (a friend from Environment Southland).

We caught up with her at her hotel then headed out for some authentic Weiner Schnitzel. It was enormous!

We left the good weather in Croatia and now it is cold and rainy in Vienna which is quite a nice change to be honest.

Plan to look around the city tomorrow then head to Prague with Jess on Friday.

Plitvice: The Hike

Croatia just keeps on delivering. Plitvice Lakes National Parks was absolutely stunning. We got up nice and early and headed straight to the park to beat the crowds (up to 15000 people per day visit). Luckily we did because we hardly saw anybody on the first 5km of a walk.

The National Park is a series of lakes that all feed into each other through waterfalls like terraces. There is no swimming or fishing allowed so the water is pristine, crystal clear and full of fish!

image

It was very cloudy when we started but cleared up to be another great day which really showed the colours of the lakes.

A really awesome place. Definitely worth the trip and the early start. We are now in Zagreb where we have one night then we are catching the overnight train to Vienna tomorrow night.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Ok so change of plans today. We were originally going to catch the night train to Zagreb then make a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park. But we met some Canadians in the train station who were getting a rental car and heading straight to Plitvice then to Zagreb tomorrow. They asked us if we wanted to go with them and we thought it would be fun. So we are now in Plitvice staying in a choice little house. We are panning to do a 6 hour hike tomorrow around what is called the ‘World’s Top Destination’. It had been highly recommended to us by everyone so we thought we should check it out.

My pack is coming along nicely. I have a patch for every country. 5 more to go.

Hvar

A very relaxed day today in Hvar. Cruised around the small town that seems to have an endless supply of waterfront restaurants. When we had heated up enough in the scorching sun we headed straight to the beach for another swim in the crystal clear water which never seems that lose its appeal.

image

image

We are now relaxing on our balcony soaking in some more rays drinking some very strange Croatian fruit beers. They have grapefruit, current & lime, orange and lemon. Lemon is by far the best with current & lime being the worst. Very cheap though.

Last night in Hvar. We are catching the catamaran ferry to Split tomorrow where we will spend the day then catch an overnight train to Zagreb which is the capital of Croatia.
